: Never seen Babylon 5, but it reminds me of Orson Scott Card's book Ender's
: Game . They have a bomb that basically, when it hits something starts
: breaking it down at the molecular level. The molecules start breaking
: apart, and then the molecules around those molecules break apart, starting
: a huge chain reaction that breaks up all of whatever the bomb is aimed at,
: whether it be a planet or star cruiser.
: But, if the Covenant have a weapon like that, why would they bother to
: 'glass' planets? Reach is the only planet we know of where they actually
: saves some part so they could excavate. Others were completely glassed
: over, made uninhabitable. If they had a so called 'planet-killer,' why
: wouldn't they just use it instead?
Possibly it's an incredibly destructive weapon that could verily screw up their own ships? Or perhaps it takes a few days to charge up, so the Humans could escape.
