In Response To: Re: Covenant Assault Boat Update *IMGS* (bentllama) I'm feeling helpful today, so I'm going to add a bit of my own input to bentllama's advice. Part of the smooth flow bentllama is talking about has to do with an effective use of edges. After all, it's the edges that cause the rounding of a surface, right? So, you want to do what you can to form a smooth line of edges. A row of edges that ends abruptly can cause a number of issues. So can having edges you don't need. Last time I posted suggestions, I focused on the gun area of your gunboat. I'm going to focus on the gun specifically, this time. I can see that you've begun changing the post the gun rests on, but it could still use some work. While it appears you've removed edges, it seems the vertices for those edges remain, and as such the edges haven't gone anywhere at all. This is evident in the shape of some of the edges flowing from the bottom to the top of the post. The bottom of the stand has a complex flow of edges that doesn't seem necessary for what can be a simple shape for the post. Here:
The ugly yellow-green lines represent (very roughly) how you want your lines to flow, smoothly, without interruption. The red circles point out problem areas in your mesh. There are vertices in the model that you don't want, and might not even be aware of. I realize my ugly yellow demonstration is a little rough on the edges, so here's a quick mock up (Shishkafied, for which I apologize) of the cannon.
Quick, simple and dirty, but it holds to the principle of flow. No edge stops at the middle of another poly. No edge loops where they aren't needed, which gets rid of some of the strange "pinching" you see around the base of your gun. And because of my attention to the flow of the mesh, the polys sort themselves out, and the count on the gun is still low. An example of how flow worked out for this particular model is the fact that the gun and the post are two seperate meshes. However, when I was done building the gun, the bottom had the perfect number of verts to make the "joint" that connects it to the base. Anyhow, I hope that helps. Keep us posted, Wraith. : keep up the hard work... What he said. =) -S |
