Hm. Good question. I'd have to go look at the specific passage, but I suspect it mentions a rather gaping hole in the armor. I'd be inclined to posit that no, the suit (which CAN operate in vacuum, but is clearly designed for a more ground-focussed role) isn't capable of self-repair of such magnitude.

The Covenant may well have material suitable for such a repair, but remember, it was all new to the Spartans -- they had no idea what to look for. The clock is unforgiving.
