I think first person persp as an afterthought would, mechancally, work just as well as its intended 3rd person. The problem before was that utilizing 3rd person requires a workaround, something that needs extra programming and testing to make operational. First person does not: as long as your vision comes from, roughly, your character's head, it's cool.

Also, the fact that you could hit 'r' in Tribes didn't make anyone immediately shut off their machine in disgust. If it's there, the people who want it will use it. And it's being there won't ruin the experience for those who don't want it.
