There were several different models of population growth if I recall correctly....a high model where growth will continue (few more billion) a moderate model and then a low where the population will peak at about 7 billion around 2050 and then start to decrease. Fertility rates are lowering in western counrtries, but what about countries with large populations (such as china) which are looking to the US and saying "I want a TV, microwave, dishwasher, copious amounts of electricity, clean water, 2 cars, garage, green lawn to be raked on sundays, stick fetching labrador blah blah I want to be able to do whatever I want to do like the western countries do!"? They will demand enormous amounts of resources.

We may not have enough time left to save this planet if we do not act now. To get a reproducing population of humans (at least 500 for genetic diversity) to another planet and create a sustainable environment with all accompanying animal and plant life required, plus materials to allow expansion and maintainance, is quite far off probably. I would prefer to invest here. Nice place, pity to ruin it.
