Personally, I think all the Marathon references were for fun and much of the game has been inspired (the body armor looks a little like a marine) and from what this page shows, there are a few marathon logos in HALO. However, there are slightly more references, but they are cute touches such as when the little grunts run away screaming 'they're everywhere!' But i seriously think people are looking into this a little too deeply, sorta like comparing the Buffy movie to the series, some similarities but totally different, one inspired by the other.
