Actually, believe it or not, the chain of causality is sort of the other way around. Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy, wrote the original script for the movie--but the people at (wherever made it; probably WB) changed it around a LOT. Then, much later, Joss went on to start the series--based on his version of the movie script (eg, Buffy burned down the gym, etc), which was the original. So it was more like the movie was inspired by the series (sorta) :-)

Just a bit of Buffy trivia.
