: Sure, Durandal makes extensive use of violence, orbital bombardment, sending
: BOBs to their deaths, crippling Battle Group Seven -- but always with a
: purpose in mind -- either for his own survival, the Compiler's survival,
: or, ultimately, for the UESC.

: With the exception of the Angry stage of Durandal's Rampancy, where he
: kidnaps the Marine, there is not a single instance in the Marathon
: universe where Durandal uses violence gratuitously, or for non-defensive
: purposes. And in that respect, I think Strauss' "experiment" is
: quite a success, and that Durandal, at least using the definitions
: (sometimes by negation) of the Rampancy terms in Defend THIS!, is very
: much of a stable Rampant AI..

Man, grasshopper strikes again! Great job looking at the big picture.

Durandal does seem awfully fixated on protecting others. Could it really be his original programming still having effect?

Oh! Perhaps, the S'pht actually reprogrammed him a little. He "contacted" the compilers when they swarmed the Marathon, but perhaps that could just be a contrived memory. Maybe the S'pht "contacted" him instead, and bent Durandal to THEIR will? Durandal would never have had the chance to experience being cracked by a compiler, and he most likely would've been easy prey for a reasonably experienced S'pht, provided the compiler got it right the first time. The Pfhor conducted the strike on Tycho, and mostly annihilated him, but if a rebellious S'pht cracked Durandal first and programmed a few methods into his base instruction set, perhaps he could have made Durandal start the rebellion, and later look for the S'pht homeworld. If Durandal hadn't been under some outside influence, he most likely would have gone looking for some leftover Jjaro technology, true to his power-hungry personality. Instead, he hunted down Lh'owon.

This doesn't hold up very well in M1, where Durandal was using everybody to get what he wanted, but it does explain why he would search the universe for 17 years looking for the homeworld of an alien race. Perhaps this also explains why Durandal occasionally shows a hint of compassion.
