The idea that the gas giant "Threshold" is a gateway is not exactly new. It has been raised a number of times in the past. Indeed the name itself suggests a doorway. There is some discussion about this on the Convergent Series section on the Story page. The whole concept is very similar to Charles Sheffield's "Convergent Series". Worth checking out.
