In Response To: Re: You and Durandal (Wrock) Anyone who watches Star Trek would know that a 'pattern buffer' is an integral part of transporter technology. In "Relics", Scotty even managed to keep himself alive inside a pattern buffer (much like the Marine does) for 75 years. Only thing is, the pattern buffer in Star Trek is not meant for longterm storage: it's only a place to briefly store the pattern before it is sent in the matter stream as you are transported to wherever you are going. Then again, maybe the pattern buffer in the Marathon stories are also limited, able to store a pattern for a limited time. Also, you should not be able to create an infinite number of marines. While the Marine can store his pattern in the buffer while still alive, I can only assume that the pattern stored is only good for one rematerialization (you would have to store the pattern again before you died again). The real question to ask is this: where does the Marine's soul factor in to such matters? I doubt that is stored in the pattern buffer. Then again, maybe Wrock makes a good point there. Maybe our 'immortal soul' is not tied to a body, but leaves a destroyed shell to inhabit the fresh body created by the pattern buffer. But no, that does not explain everything. Because suppose the Marine kills a bunch of Pfhor before dying. When the Marine is rematerialized by the pattern buffer, the Pfhor are not still dead, and there is no dead body to be found by the new marine. Instead, we find ourselves 'starting back', before the death occurred. Maybe then, the pattern buffer isn't so much a functioning piece of technology, but really more of a deus ex machina....a way to explain how we shift ourself forward and backwards in time. Maybe we always had the power to do so, and it was not until Infinity that we discovered we could... And maybe we spend too much time trying to explain a 'save feature' in real world terms. ;) -Greg |
