In Response To: Novels? Movies? (Loren Petrich)

: There has been speculation about turning the Marathon series into a novel or
: a movie, but the Bungie folx have preferred not to spend their time on all
: the legwork and dealmaking and bureaucracy necessary for that. However,
: there is a much simpler solution: do a serial in a science-fiction
: magazine. One only has to write a little at a time, and one does not have
: to make a deal to publish a whole book. IIRC, that's been done for
: Starcraft.

That it has. A very interesting proposition, indeed. Of course, the author would need to secure the rights to do such a thing. (But Bungie doesn't really seem to care about Marathon anymore, that should be relatively easy.) But who would be able to write it? Thinking of good writers, Gary Simmons immediately pops to mind, although he's more of a humorous writer than serious. I don't really know of anyone who could do a REALLY good Marathon-based piece of fiction, but that's probably due to the fact that most of the people here aren't even out of high school.

: A good one for the Marathon series, and certainly also Halo, is some
: nuts-and-bolts SF magazine such as Analog Science Fiction,
: http://www.analogsf.com

One of my best friends' fathers gets that magazine. It's very good, and widely read.

: As to movies, computer games have generally not translated very well into
: them, despite some game producers showing evidence of movie envy. However,
: the recent Tomb Raider movie seems to be at least halfway there, which
: suggests that successful translation might well be possible.

Yep, the only way they can possibly make a successful movie is to completely butcher what the game is. It's for a simple reason: people are involved in games, and people watch movies.
