In Response To: Re: Durandal, Tycho and Strauss (General-RADIX) : In addition, I always figured that Leela was the Commander of the UESC
But Leela's the "Ship Operations AI", not the "Command AI". No matter how much control Leela might have over shipboard operations, I can't imagine the Marathon being sent out without a nominal human Captain or Commander, or at least some sort of political figure taking that post. I guess whoever this person was, they were either killed or incapacitated early in the Pfhor attack and the chain of command fell to Leela as a result. There being three AIs of similar size and computing power but different programming and presumably different core locations makes sense, because it allows for greater redundancy. For instance, the Boeing 777 airliner's flight control system uses three different microprocessors, built by three different companies (Intel, AMD, Motorola) in three different locations in the aircraft to achieve a three-three redundancy against failures or accidents. Three is the smallest number that allows for a proper vote - two together, one against, and without the risk of having an impasse. Should one AI be knocked out, the other two would be able to take over. : (Possibly-tangential: Tycho went rampant after being resurrected "in
Leela does go rampant at the end of Marathon Infinity, when she is brought to the Vylae homeworld and goes rampant on the Vylae network upon reactivation. Leela's story arc initially involved the player going and saving her, but all of that came to naught. Perhaps when she was disassembled, she had some of Durandal's code placed in her by a compiler? IIRC, Cortana was meant to be Durandal's "sister" in the true sense, sharing a great deal of the same code instead of just being "resurrected in his image". It goes down to her name, that of the sword Courtain or Cortana, which bore the inscription, "I am Cortana, of the same steel and temper as Joyeuse and Durandal." This is an old connection. I'm on board with the "Durandal has some of Traxus IV's code" theory and aware of one of the few mentions that make it explicit. Durandal openly states that he hates Leela for her justice and loyalty during his angry rant, and that, along with Leela's far more benevolent nature, suggests that the two aren't so similar in coding. Perhaps Leela is 64 billion exabytes in size like Tycho and Durandal but I suppose that's where the similarities end.
