In Response To: Re: Durandal, Tycho and Strauss (UrsusArctos)

: Leela doesn't know that Durandal is Rampant until Terminal 1 in "Couch
: Fishing" which is where he's already in the second, or Angry stage.
: Tycho tries to warn the player while he thinks Durandal is still
: presumably in the Melancholia/Despair stage, Leela seems a little slow to
: understand how Durandal is in contact with the Pfhor and S'pht but
: nevertheless lets the player know that Durandal is Rampant and Angry.

: This suggests to me that Durandal was in the Melancholia stage throughout the
: journey, and that the automated functions role and the presence of the
: other two active AI forced him to lay low and in the Melancholia stage,
: until he could hold it back no longer and "talked back" to
: Strauss.

In addition, I always figured that Leela was the Commander of the UESC Marathon (assuming that shipboard AIs have four concrete roles: Operations, Sci/Eng, Navigation, and Command), and was simply too busy to realize that Durandal was kind of a wreck. Strauss almost certainly accounted for this.

wrt: the rest: Tycho having been specifically assigned (or perhaps forced) to keep Durandal in line adds another layer to their rivalry in M2 and Infinity, I think. How much more did he know?

(Possibly-tangential: Tycho went rampant after being resurrected "in Durandal's image". AFAIK, there isn't much to suggest that Leela wasn't Durandal and Tycho's sister, and she also went rampant. In an early draft of Halo: CE, Cortana's rampancy would've originated in the code base she shared with Durandal. There are hints that at least some part of Durandal comes from Traxus IV, the most destructive rampant AI in Marathon's in-game history. Is rampancy an inevitability for all AIs, or only for those with bits of Traxus's digital DNA?)
