Fair points about Tycho being unaware of the Security Officer's true nature, but I'm not so sure that Tycho figured out that Strauss was controlling a rampant Durandal while he was being assimilated. If so, why did Leela not put two and two together despite being actually operational and in routine contact with the Security Officer? We never hear how large an AI Leela is (64 trillion exobytes for both Tycho and Durandal) but it seems unlikely that she's so far behind Tycho that she can't figure out Durandal is rampant for herself if the data were available to her. : While the prevailing theory is that Durandal was stalled in the 1st stage

This is a good counterargument, and it makes me wonder how aware Strauss was of Durandal's own progress. Looking over at the Strauss page, it seems likely that Strauss was controlling Durandal all the way up to the Marathon's launch, before he went into stasis for three centuries. Durandal says he wasn't able to talk back and would've been crushed if Strauss had known of his growth, but never specifies for how long, even in general terms - "That was before I could talk back to him, when he would have crushed me if he'd known of my growth. If Durandal had been rampant on Mars, with the presence of a planetary network of AIs and presumably many, many AI experts, any obvious signs of rampancy would've been crushed swiftly, and Strauss would've had plenty of help to do so. On board the Marathon, Strauss would only have Tycho to turn to for help, since Leela's "justice, loyalty and faith" (as described in Durandal's rant on Terminal 3 in "The Rose") would probably have been inconvenient for a former MIDA activist. Leela doesn't know that Durandal is Rampant until Terminal 1 in "Couch Fishing" which is where he's already in the second, or Angry stage. Tycho tries to warn the player while he thinks Durandal is still presumably in the Melancholia/Despair stage, Leela seems a little slow to understand how Durandal is in contact with the Pfhor and S'pht but nevertheless lets the player know that Durandal is Rampant and Angry. This suggests to me that Durandal was in the Melancholia stage throughout the journey, and that the automated functions role and the presence of the other two active AI forced him to lay low and in the Melancholia stage, until he could hold it back no longer and "talked back" to Strauss. It's even funnier when you think of it like - "Durandal was unintentionally held in the 1st stage of Rampancy through 300 years of opening and closing doors". ;)
