IIRC, there's a terminal in M1 theorizing that with a big enough computer network, a stable rampant AI might be possible, but so far no one has been willing to sacrifice a planetary net to find out. I believe implying that that was the reason Gheritt White was playing with Durandal on the marathon - to have a net that, if not planet-sized, was at least Jovian-Moon-sized for his experiments.
