Not trying to be "nice"; just sharing my thoughts. It's bizarre to call it "unfair" to someone to follow their explicitly stated wish; as though you know better than them what they want, regardless of why. Unfair to the public, sure.
Are you really calling someone "toxic" who's largely responsible for your project being possible at all?
