PS, I forgot to add that while John was in stasis, he slowly aged because cryogenic preservation sadly isn't the stasis fields from Red Dwarf. He was 17 when he was frozen and woke up after the prison ship crashed to find he had the body of a 23 or 25 year old man, but his mind was unchanged.
This was combined with his mental disabilities and suppressed sociopathic tendencies.
