: Hey, as long as we're talking about Halo and AV asset decisions and such, I
: finally managed to get around to playing the first Halo game a few months

They didn't think it through I guess. It's especially weird in Halo 2 where they all speak english and use the names humans gave them (grunts, elites, hunters etc.) even though their real species names are completely different and in the books, they are described as hating the human given names and consider them an insult, especially the Sangheli AKA elites.

Only the grunts speak english in Halo 1 but by Reach they made the covenant only speak their own language including grunts. Maybe the english speaking grunts were intended for comic relief or something. (they were sometimes too)

The elites are technically also speaking english in Halo 1: they use Sergeant Johnson's lines in reverse to speak. E.g. them going "worp worp worp!" when they see you is Johnson yelling "Go go go!"
