Perseus (and others too), I must admit that I haven't played the original Half Life, but I've played Half Life 2. I have played Unreal (Gold). I also played the first Halo. I agree with Treellama about the shear "feel" of the games; the immersive, atmospheric quality about them.
I highly recommend that you play Unreal and a Half Life title, as you may find that you are not disappointed by them, even though the "technology" may be dated. These games hold up very well even now; primarily due to the atmosphere and story. And they are fun to explore. Actually, that is the key word here; fun. This is what they have in common with Bungie's gaming roots.
I'm gonna try out Half Life, as I really enjoyed 2. :)
