Ah, yes, 'epic story nonsense' is always a real downer. The original StarCraft had elements of that, but they weren't terribly bothersome. StarCraft II, on the other hand, beats you over the head with it... repeatedly. Halo touches on a bit of that, especially the more recent games. However, the original still reminded you at various points that really you've got a rather myopic perspective on the overall story; there's other things happening, other viewpoints, other events that are just as important. You're still doing something that will potentially save humanity (wipe out the Flood while preventing the Halo rings from being activated), but this isn't the uber-climactic moment in history that StarCraft II presents you with. One interesting thing to note is that games that fall into the 'epic story nonsense' trap usually are one or even several of the following: A) Terribly written.
This is why I like Marathon: it avoids the usual nonsense 'epic' pattern. Vale,
