Even so, the original Unreal Tournament was quite excellent, I thought. The gameplay is fluid, fast-paced, and well-designed. It's definitely up there with Marathon and Battlefield 1942 in terms of the multiplayer element, I think.
Now, of course, it is still kind of weird they went the route they did. Started with a very serious, well-done (supposedly, though I've never played it) single-player campaign and then went over to a juvenile multiplayer-based game.
