I wish I could say it was standard throughout but it's not. The best advice I can give is that when you find a switch that operates a door or platform observe how it works. Can the switch be flipped on and then off (like a light switch ) or does it stay on all the time or does it deactivate after a short period and then need to be activated again.

That's exactly how the one on Colony Ship works. The same as the one on Couch Fishing where you both got trapped and had to restart the game.

The seven platform puzzle operates in the same way. Flip the switch on and off to start and stop the platform.

Indeed, the very first switch you find in the game (on Arrival) operates a small platform which can be stopped and started by a flip of the switch.

Even if you didn't know this, that door on Colony Ship which caused you the problems could have been opened on your side (by you) allowing Blackstar to join you.

I have no doubt Blackstar will get his revenge. As you burn in the lava on Ingue Ferroque, he'll be standing at the final terminal... LAUGHING WITH DURANDAL. ;)
