I tried the back-pedaling route a few times. Even with lights out, I'm no Solid Snake, but I never once got cut off. They'd all chase me mercilessly instead. I averaged one hit per short hallway, then get creamed in the south between the Ghasts ahead and oozes behind.

Juan's ooze blocked me every time under your route, without potions. With a bubbly red, and a "never stop firing" attitude toward the Ghasts in the south, both routes gave me a no-damage run first try. Yours was significantly easier to pull off, though, so facing backwards is only worthwhile if you desperately want to conserve potions at the expense of damage and/or sanity.
