In Response To: Re: I would like some more help... (MrHen) : How long have the Player and Durandal known each other? I seem to recall
: I am assuming that Durandal existed before the Marathon. I guess I never
From the Marathon 2 manual: "Durandal had always been unpredictable, even when he was just opening doors and managing food processors three hundred years ago on Mars." So, probably yes. We don't really know where the player's false memories (like his childhood on Mars) end and his real ones begin, but that detail would be kind of pointless if it turned out to have never happened. Were all known battleroids created during 2194-2214 (ref: Beware of Low-Flying Defense Drones)? If so, when was Mjolnir 54 thawed out for the Marathon mission? How did they ensure that he believed he was going of his own free will? I guess if you really wanted to connect everything together, you could write a fanfic where one of the characters from PID later became Durandal. But I think Bungie would have dropped some hints if they intended something like that (apart from the bit where Angry Durandal "reminds you of something from your past"). Still, if the player is really Eddings, and he really spent 1994-2194 just wandering the planets immortal, then he was probably at least aware of Durandal's creation. Or was he in stasis during that time for some reason or another? Maybe the memory is of some chance encounter with a human whose brain was later used to create Durandal (or Traxus)? Could Gheritt White have been a real individual? Of course, it's equally likely that the face he remembers is some other evil genius from his past, such as Strauss or Muller. It doesn't have to be Durandal himself. You really have to make an ass-massive number of assumptions to say anything at all about Marathon's story. I'm aware of Matt's statement that most of the complexity is accidental, but dang(ed) if it isn't fun. Besides, you have to decide on *some* things if you want to add to the story.
