I've been using for years, ever since Steam was still in public beta, and I wouldn't say it's particularly invasive. It does tend to work better if you've got a decent connection, but I was able to use it with a modem and a lot of patience for years before I got broadband.

I ran into the project lead for this mod over at B.net; I think he's got the right idea and it would be really great if this came to fruitition.

And no offense to the Mac users, but the whole Marathon-is-for-Macs-and-only-for-Macs-so-sayeth-the-gurus thing is a little old now. Marathon runs just fine on PCs, and many people, myself included, are only able to play it because of that. Not all of us can afford to have a PowerMac 7600 under the desk just for fun anymore.
