: You might want to talk to Andrew Lloyd Webber. In Jesus Christ Superstar, the
: song Everything's Alright is written in 5/4 time. I was in my school's
: choir in 9th grade and we sang it. First time I heard it, it blew me away.
: We were all tripping over the rhythm - it's only natural to try to
: lengthen it to 6/4. Not only that, but the song Hosana has a phrase that
: is in 7/8 time. It took a lot of practice to get that one right.
A couple of years back I was playing in a jazz orchestra, and the conductor, Graeme Lyall, wrote a pretty whacked out piece, called "eleventy one". It was mostly in 11/4, but jumped into 7/8 and 4/4 now and then. And the rhythm wasn't even the hard part - he did all sorts of wacky things in there, like making us (the violins) detune the g string in a bar's rest to f, and then retune once the phrase was over. Now that took some skill. It was a pretty cool piece.
