I still suspect that the Grunts are Nar, Engineers are S'pht, and Jackals are some kind of Pfhor. I don't think Elites, Cov Hunters, Brutes, or Prophets can connect to Marathon. The Pfhor wiped out all the other Covenant species in the Maraverse, and the Covenant wiped out all the other Pfhor species in the Haloverse.
It's necessary that Earth c. 1980 is identical in both timelines, if you're trying to reconcile them. However, if you consider the speed of light, events taking place on Lh'owon could have diverged thousands of years earlier.
I still don't think Bungie will shoehorn Halo and Marathon together like that. If it's possible, it'll have to be done by a group of fans, after GURPS Halo is released and/or announced to be nonexistent.
