: The article reads, '...But for Seropian, it all starts with Marathon...What
: they [Marathon players] didn't know is that the character they were
: playing was the very first incarnation of Master Chief... "I don't
: think you ever find that out, but it's the same character," Seropian
: says. "God, we've never said that before, but it's completely
: obvious. Cortana isn't in Marathon, but there are three A.I.s in there
: that came from the same stylistic story line." '
Deja vu. Or however it's spelled. I have the feeling I've read that, or a similar quote, somewhere else.
*One googling later*
Look at the news for April 1, 2002.
: Now, the only question left is, is the security officer literally the same
: character as the Chief, or a previous incarnation of the same entity?
I think it's option 2. Look at the story lines: Marathon has the player stopping by a colony and then being abducted by Durandal, and even though it's not included in the game, the Master Chief battles for the survival of a colony planet (Reach) after which he's off to Halo by advice from Cortana.
The deviation comes in Halo 2 where the Master Chief is returned to earth.
