In Response To: New To Marathon (Zetor)

: (don't think about
: tracking me down, I got a sniper rifle, a .45 pistol and a cell phone).

Ah, a hoplophile. Charming.

: The plot isn't just given to you before you
: play just so you can see justification as to why you suddenly decide to
: barge in with your pistol and then some tazer gun or melee weapon to go
: blow crap up. I don't exactly know yet of any cool details to the plot
: other than an alien invasion has occured and the AIs got screwed, but at
: least the plot still flows throughout the game and the idea of reading
: from terminals is pretty cool.

And the terminals themselves get better with the Marathon sequels. Unfortunately, in the original Marathon the terminals are just text and maps.

: But one of the strengths I have found so
: far to Marathon is that it has really got a great feel to it. The game's
: graphics are pretty good for its time (though I care about graphics the
: least). It may be a wee bit of pixel-clad, but what I like most about the
: looks is the fact that the environments and cool colors much more than
: compensate for it. It gives a really dark and scary feel mixed in with a
: sci-fi, starship environment, and I think that's much more scary than in
: some haunted house. Now if I could just get that background music to
: work... Maybe I should try more memory.

The atmosphere of the game is highly original, and some could debate that the first Marathon was the only game of the trilogy to have this strange psychological feel of alien claustrophobia. There have been 3rd party scenarios and probably other game titles that have tried to synthesize Marathon's essence, but like the Colonel's chicken, many have tried to imitate but most fall short. Though I'd say the first of the Flood levels in Halo come close.

: So either way I would still like to play Marathon, but answer me this: IS
: Marathon just a game where you go around and turn monsters to goo?

Sure, if that's what you want to get out of it. That's the great thing about the game; there's multiple motivations for finishing it. Some players ignore the terminals and look for baddies to kill, while others find the combat as mere intermissions between terminals, but I'd say most players fall somewhere in between. Of course, there's also a whole slew of technical aspects that go along with the game, such as map editors, physics model editors, etc., and there are some that probably enjoy making maps for Marathon more than they do actually playing them.

Though you may want to wait off on using these goodies until you beat the game.

: And how
: does this forum manage to stay alive? Basically every Unreal (not Unreal
: Tournament) forum i've been to is practically dead, as well as lots of
: other types of these sorts of games.

This forum stays alive mostly because there remains an interest in the Marathon legacy. Had there never been any editing tools created or had the Marathon 2 source code never been released, it's questionable as to whether or not any of us would still be here. But there are still plenty of 3rd party scenarios being worked on; in fact, a new M1 scenario was just released (9.5 years after the original engine). There's all kinds of Marathon content still being generated by fans, including but not limited to scenarios, maps, artwork, music remixes, and fan fiction.

In addition to this, the expansive and and sometimes cryptic nature of Marathon's story still warrants a fair amount of speculation, and though this is not as rabid as it once was, people are still coming up with new ideas and theories about what was really going on in the Marathon universe...
