It's a major area of speculation over at the unforums. Consensus is that it's a reference to sillicon chips. The AI Melissa expressly shows contempt for our hardware ("and FIBER? What's next, tin cans and twine?") and so a loosely-packed (in 2552 terms) array of sillicon transistors probably does look like a vast sandy desert to her.
