Consensus is that it's a reference to sillicon chips. The AI Melissa expressly shows contempt for our hardware ("and FIBER? What's next, tin cans and twine?") and so a loosely-packed (in 2552 terms) array of sillicon transistors probably does look like a vast sandy desert to her. There are two really good interpretations of the SPDR's actions as related by the computer log transcript, matching it up point-by-point with the Widow's Journey fable. I'll try to find the links.
