In Response To: What other games do you play besides Marathon? (Starship Security Officer) I tend to buy a lot of games and never play them... I've had Tron 2.0 sitting around waiting to play since it came out, and Far Cry behind that. I should wait til games hit the bargain bin before I buy them. Games I've played and love almost as much as Marathon: Half Life, Opposing Force, and Blueshift. Amazing, near-perfect FPS gameplay, well-told if cliched plot, amazing atmosphere. Probably the best series of games I've played on the PC, dated graphics or no. System Shock 2. As close to Marathon as you can get in terms of scary atmosphere and story depth. Amazingly tense gameplay, sort of a sci-fi horror FPS. Great environments, wide-open gameplay that manages to feel non-linear even though it really isn't. Deus Ex, despite the brain-dead AI. Again you have awesome environments, nice mix between shooting and exploring. Interesting story. Bad voice acting. Crimson Skies! Most fun I've ever had shooting down zeppelins. No idea why this game wasn't a hit. Best voice (over)acting ever. Myth/Myth 2. 'nuff said. Worth it for the music and the narration. Myth 3 however... meh. Oni (I had a blast playing this despite all of the well-documented flaws. It is a FUN game) Halo. Despite the incredibly repetitive middle portion of the game, the beginning and ending make it one of the better FPS I've played. Combat is just about as perfect as it gets. Thief and Thief 2, Call of Duty, No One Lives Forever 1 and 2, AvP (especially the first one), Undying, Morrowind, Mafia, Fallout and Fallout 2 all pop into my head as great games from the last few years. And Serious Sam for laugh-out-loud silly shooter fun. |
