I gave up and started the level again. This time I didn't use the ammo stached at the s.w. corner of the map. I have read the most recent Rubicon Online spoiler which suggested not doing this stache and using a nearby secret route instead - thus avoiding the rocket jump across the pillars (I hope you know what I mean).

Taking this alternative route, I got to the top of the map quicker, and lo! - that rotten door opened and I was able to complete the level.

AT LAST!!
