The thing about the Final Fantasy games is that the stories are character driven -- so the stories are structured around the characters growing and developing. The fallout of this is that the events themselves are a nonsense, and strung together to cause events that teach you about the caracters. If we look at Marathon, it's basically the opposite -- the player essentially has no identity, and though Tycho, Leela and Durandal grow to a degree, they stories are primarily event based. Nobody has hit the middle ground yet, but it's a reasonable aim. : As I try and think of agames with a good strong story I can't think of any
System Shock 2, and for what it is I'd say Zelda is a solid story (if not, perhaps a good one). Same for Mario. The sturdiest seem to be DnD based games, but they are a very particular type of story suited more to tabletops gaming and less to computer gaming. I'd say all the old Point'n'Click games by Lucasarts had nice and solid stories, too -- I have a particular fondness for The Dig myself :) : EV:Nova had some good ideas, but fell to the fact it was just a shooter. I
I quite enjoyed the story of the Neotemplars covered in the first Broken Sword game, I must say. [b] |
