Can't remember if this is canon or Rubicon backstory, but I recall that AIs begin to go rampant based on allocating resources to better-mimic human behavior. Basically the exact opposite of what Flamerock has to say.

It is an interesting question, though. The way we control doors here in the 21st (and in the 20th) century seems more than adequate. Putting an AI in charge of all of it seems unnecessary and worth investigation.
