Rethinking Player-Durandal Relations in Rubicon | ||

In Response To: Re: RX Tycho Plank -- Request (Adam Ashwell) : Here's a hint: Durandal, trusting you, gives you the opportunity to hurt him. You know, I've been thinking for a while about the relationship between the player and Durandal in Rubicon. Maybe I'm picking up on the wrong things here, but in general it seems to me that Durandal's more and more regarding us as an actual friend as opposed to just a tool that he uses to do his bidding (as in say, M2). Not as far as an equal, but at least something more substantial than just a grunt with a big gun, playful teasing aside (like when he introduces us to the Dangi Maser). On our part, I wonder if Durandal thinks that the player actually willingly travels with him, that the decision to stay with him is one done by choice. I think this more now because of what Adam says above. If Durandal still did think of us as someone to send around to kill Pfhor/retrieve uplink chips/smash circuits he really wouldn't give us the chance to do what we do to get us to the Tycho Plank. But then again, maybe Durandal's just gone soft. After all, in the Pfhor Plank Tycho pulls the wool over his eyes. As Steve remarked in the original Volunteers series, it's kind of disappointing to hear him say that he didn't see that one coming.
