The general impression I get isn't so much that many people are against it, but rather, don't see the point, and don't think it will work. I've refrained from comment thus far (been busy - and yes I will clean up the spam soon), but here's my take on the whole situation:
Marathon mod for HL2:
- Cool enough idea in concept. I'd play it, if it got done, if it ran on my computer.
- I don't think HL2 is the best engine choice though (for cross-platform reasons).
- And I don't think this is very likely to go anywhere anyway (just statistically, and by the apparent [lack of] skills on the part of the developer, no offense intended)
- But I don't want to discourage someone just cause their project is unlikely to succeed (just witness Rubicon, Eternal, Sigma, and the like - so many years, so many doubts, but they became something).
- Nor do I want to discourage anyone just cause I'm not in their target audience (i.e. I'm a Mac guy, thus can't play HL2). Nevertheless, good luck getting help from a mostly-Mac crowd for a non-Mac project.
