Because platform bigotry and Valve's nonsense aside, Marathon on HL2 would be unplayable on the mac. No matter how kickass HL2 is, maccies won't be able to play it (unless they have a PC in addition to their mac).

Because PiD for DOOM 3 can be played on the mac, while a hypothetical Marathon HL2 can not. ;)

By all means. But all the maccies would be left out in the cold, and I suspect it's the maccies who are generally against this. At the risk of repeating myself; Aleph One (and DOOM3 for that matter) has one feature that trumps the HL2 engine: It's cross-platform. Marathon HL2 would shut out a large chunk of it's potential players. Marathon DOOM3 would not.
Mind you, this, like the majority of the Marathon projects that have been announced thorugh the ages, is unlikely to come to anything, so this is basically just a tempest in a teapot. B)
