There is a way to use zip compression with Mac files, but it's tricky. The problem with zip is it ignores the resource fork - it discards it - and the resource fork is critical. Using Stuffit Lite to create sit files will fix the problem, and Stuffit Lite is shareware - you can downloade it and use it with warnings for free.
