But then you have projects like Rubicon, 5 years in the making and probably the most acclaimed Marathon scenario to date... or Eternal, EIGHT years in the making and STILL got over 1200 downloads in the first month of its release. Granted that's probably not even a sizable portion of the active base of any modern game, but it's still well over a thousand people in *one month*, and new downloads are still trickling in...

That's certainly plenty of an audience for me, and it just goes to show that even many years after a game is out of date, if it was a worthwhile and memorable game to begin with, you can still find an audience for a mod for it. For another example besides Marathon, witness Ambrosia's "Escape Velocity", which is still to this day being updated and has mods and such being produced for it.

Besides, the retrogamer movement is only growing, and someday Marathon/EV/etc mods will be like visiting an old 50s diner, or driving a classic automobile - a pleasant stroll down memory lane, with people forviging of the limitations of the time, and actually finding them quite entertaining in a quaint sort of way. Relics from a simpler time, when people focused on quality and things were built to last...
