In Response To: 343GS quotes and thoughts *long* (Mark Simmons) Might as well add my two cents... : My function is to prevent it from leaving this installation. But I require

: Like firing Halo perhaps...? Absolutely, He obviously has a lot of knowledge about the Flood and knows the danger they represent...but it seems obvious to me that GS343 was never meant to have the ability to fire the Halo by himself, kind of like a two key system on a nuclear launch - he must have a "Reclaimer" to concur. : : The Flood must not escape the installation. They would consume all.
But GS343's creators felt that the only way to defeat the Flood was to use the Halo(s) - so that wouldn't be GS343's understanding of the problem? Ultimately it would prevent the Flood from escaping, or at least from escaping and surviving. This leads to an interesting conclusion, that the Flood might be able to survive and drift in space for quite some distance - 25,000 light years perhaps? : The installation was specifically built to study and contain the Flood... : ...and: ...samples were kept here after the last catastrophic outbreak...for

: On the basis of what 343GS has told us, there must have been at least two.
: Both of his comments imply that Halo was built after the last catastrophic
: If it were in existence prior to the last 'catastrophic' outbreak, then
: Arguable as well, you don't specifically embark on building something on that
: Now, given that we know, from 343GS later comments, that 'Halo' appears to

: Question: Why would you activate something as terminal as Halo for anything
I suggest that the Halo(s) were built during the first catastophic outbreak, and were in fact the solution to that outbreak. This leads me to my own theory that the Forerunner actually intended to save the sentient life of the universe from the Flood by firing the Halo. It seems obvious that life on the Halo is spared the effects of its firing - quite simply it is the only way any Flood could have survived at all. But if you wanted to eradicate all sentient life as a failsafe to rid the galaxy of the Flood, why would you choose to preserve samples of the only species you truly wanted to destroy? Why not others as well? Surely you would use the Halo as a safe base in which you would save as many species as possible....in libraries perhaps? or extensive facilities? : So: 1) Why does he expect this behaviour from the Flood? Has a similar
GS343 has a great knowledge of the Flood, presumably mostly due to his programming (his very existence is due to the Flood threat) and also as he has spent much time with them (this is slighly less proven as he is "grateful to see that some of them have survived" - suggesting that he himself has not been active until recently?) : 2) Why would the Flood want to change the atmosphere...? Surely it would
Perhaps this is the very nature of their threat. They not only infect, but also destroy the habitat, then move on to pastures new. That would explain why they would be such voracious consumers and also why they would ultimately destroy the whole galaxy. Especially if you couple it with the fact that they could survive in deep space and travel up to 25,000 light years!
: The installation was well conceived. It is surely the only way to end the
:
Back to my theory that the Halo is basically an Ark. Samples of sentient species were saved by being placed on the Halo when it was fired thus ensuring their survival - the only way to end the Flood threat to all species. : So which galaxy is the threatened species in? or...everyone else made it (covenant, human etc) so where are the Forerunner?
: Anyway, that'll probably do for now. :-) : Thoughts...? : Mark
