I don't think the Forerunner would seperate themselves to that degree. I think they would try to stop the Flood at any cost, even if it meant killing themselves. They could at least huddle together in the safety of a Halo and blast the surrounding space into oblivion...although they wouldnt survive too long after that, i assume. As to the remarks about the flood not being dead once you apply excessive force to their host body, this is true, if you read Starhammer or
Also, about the marine "playing dead", yes, the Vang/Flood would probably have left him alone because there weren't any parasites around that didnt have a host, so they probably thought him uninteresting because in the Vang books it says they prefer live food that screams... although I doubt the Flood would be so easily fooled as to think he was really dead if he was just faking.
