In Response To: Question on visibility in space. (Postmortem)

: I've been wondering, since I don't know too much about the actual mechanics
: of physics and light properties in space, how visible would Shield World
: Trevelyan be at various distances? It's easy enough to image if your
: within a few million miles... would probably look very similar to what was
: described in Glasslands. But what about beyond that? Does the way
: visibility works in space allow you to see crystal clear for light years,
: or would the curvature of Trevelyan fade out into the blackness much as
: mountains fade into grey/white as you get further from them, so that you
: could never actually see an abrupt end to it?
: For example, it would be impossible for Trevelyan to ever appear visibly
: similar to the Forerunner planetoid at the end of Halo 3, right? With it's
: size, could it ever be that clear from far away?

: I can imagine it would look quite clear if viewed through a telescope, but
: I'm just trying to wrap my mind around a spherical object as large as
: Earth's orbit suspended in space and having a hard time doing so.

: Any help putting this thing into perspective?

Unless there was a star nearby to shine light on it, you wouldn't see it in visible light. Close enough to it, you'd be able to see how it blocks stars on its opposite side. If the outer surface was non-reflective, you just plain wouldn't see it. If the surface was highly reflective, you'd see stars reflected around its edges and they'd appear distorted.

The Forerunner planet at the end of Halo 3 was easily visible because there was a bright blue nebula as well as the planet's star to illuminate it, not to mention whatever makes the Forerunner glyphs was self-illuminating. There's no real comparison to the Dyson Sphere.

What I want to know is with an artificial star at the shield world's center, how was Nylund and Traviss describing a day/night cycle? It's be constantly day on the surface, like it would be on the Shield World in Halo Wars.
