In Response To: Re: Question on visibility in space. (Stephen L. (SoundEffect)) : No, I know, and another difference is Betelgeuse is seen by its own light : whereas Jupiter is seen solely from light reflected off it from our sun. : Their apparent size in the sky is both two points of light. The distances : to both objects are vastly different. Four orders of magnitude different apparent diameter is a pretty big difference. You can see the disc of Jupiter with a relatively low-power telescope, but you need something a lot more powerful to see Betelgeuse's disc (it was first seen in 1920). My el cheapo scope can see Jupiter's disc plain as day, but Jupiter's moons and Betelgeuse are all point sources (the latter far brighter than the former, of course). Betelgeuse's apparent diameter is far less than that of Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
