Cause Halo is a game and the weak spot is to give you something to aim for. Even if they weren't malleable they could still hange an armored plate there so the weak spot is definitely a game convention.
I'd love to see a crab form with a soft under belly. Perhaps a frag grenade could flip it on its back and you jump on top and strafe its belly before it rights itself.

Maybe its a good all round shape and I suppose it has more character than a mini-wraith. I mean how would you know that the mini-wraith was a Hunter? Still, if you killed one and saw the orange blood then you would wonder...
