Indeed, but this does NOT mean that Hunters can't assume different shapes. If a Hunter is made from a mass of worms then I see no reason why they can't have eye worms on the ends of the arms rather than on the 'head'.
We can draw analogies with Earth animals but I don't know of any natural law that says that colonial organisms must only assume one shape per species.
I think that its more fun to have different shaped Hunters that carry different weapons. Hunters appear sentient and its hard to believe that they are a one trick species. They could at least use different weapons and it would be nice if they could fit into different shaped armor (like hermit crabs can wear different shells).
With regards to their 'eyes'...
They don't have eyes as such, there is a grey/white area below the lip of their 'helmet. It is a single band that has two dark areas that look like eyes from a distance. But they are not eyes like human eyes.
