This reply mutated as I wrote it because I kept getting different ideas as I went along. I don't want to edit into separate msgs so be aware and don't be thrown if you see more than one thread of thought......
Especially as the Hunter on the right has three fingers and a thumb whilst the Hunters we fight have three fingers, each at the 120 degree position around the hand.
So either the Bungie artists made a mistake or Hunters can have variation in their body forms.
As for their armor, we speculated that they either: built the armour like anelid worms or corals can build hard casings, or they live on a world with other animals that have hard shells and wear their shells (like hermit crabs do).
I prefer the second idea because it suggests thet they could have many different shapes depending on the armor they wear. This way we could see cool new Hunter shapes, with different weapons.
The spiny, four limbed, shape could be the shape of an animal shell that is traditionally used by Hunters for battle. The Covenant armour could be a technological recreation/adaptation of a natural form.
They would make the ultimate cyborgs. Imagine a Phantom that was half worm half mech. It could deliver troops to battle then transform ito a twenty foot tall battle mech. Or imagine a shade turret that could walk and fire without a gunner... (especially if it fired needles like the Covenant equivalent of the warthog's gun)
You would get cool enemies that would be way powerful but with a natural (in both senses) weak spot. I think that would be great for gameplay.
Its a pity that Humans and Hunters will probably be allies in H3, I'd love to have been the MC with a mission on the Hunter home world. But maybe Bungie will let us play as a Prophet warrior to destroy Earth so we can see the Prophets' point of view. ;-)
