For nearly the entire history of mankind a popular pasttime has been getting together a group of people in order to speculate on topics. It still is today, but there is a difference. Due to the fact that the human population has doubled over the last two centuries or so, and there are now over 6,000,000,000 of us, nearly every conceivable topic of speculation has already been mulled over many times before, and useful realizations in these areas can usually only be reached by the most elite of thinkers. Therefore, when a group of us ordinary people find something that noone has really given any thought to before, and that our meagre minds can contribute to, we find great enjoyment in picking it apart, no matter how futile it really is. We all know that nothing useful in terms of knowledge can come from it, but that is not the reason we do it. We speculate on topics of fantasy merely for the enjoyment and mental exercise it brings. This may be a new concept to you, but some people receive enjoyment and a sense of fullfillment simply by doing what has not been done before. Why do you think the guiness book of records is so popular? Do you really think people give a damn about the practical applications of someone firing a bow with their feet while doing a handstand and getting a bullseye on a target ten meters away? Next time, before you make disparaging remarks about other peoples actions, first think about their reasons for doing it in the first place. | |
