An in-depth theory about hunters | |

In Response To: Re: Yes (mrbananas) Here is some possibly hunter-relevant stuff i know about annellid life: 1. Tube Worms, an aquatic annelid, are capable of building a rocky tube around themselves, which they retreat into when threatened. Many other species of worm are capable of building similar structures, the shape of which varying from species to species. 2. Most land dwelling worms are actually remarkably strong for their size, with more than 60% of their bodies being pure muscle. 3. Many worms develop symbiotic relationships with other creatures, including other worms. 4. All worms absorb oxygen through their skin, and can therefore breathe underwater. (Hmmm.....Submarine Hunters?) Just a bit of food for thought ;-) On the topic of hunters taking other shapes, i think its a bit ulikely. It is obvious that not every worm that makes up a hunter is identical. As far as i can tell, a hunter only has two eyes, which means that only one or two of the worms has eyes while the rest dont. The same applies with the obviously fairly solid triad of claws at the end of each hand. This means that some, if not all of the worms are built for an express purpose. Have a look at a Man-of-war jellyfish, or bluebottle as some people call it. These are not actually single organisms, but are colonies of polyps. At the top you have a single large organism filled with gas, to which all the other polyps are attached, and which provides the basic framework of the multi-organism. This is not unlike the large main worm inside a hunter. Underneath the "float", you have 3 other types of polyp. You have dactylozooid (that find and catch prey with poisonous stingers called nematocysts), gonozooid (that reproduce), and gastrozooid (that digest the food, like a stomach). It takes no great strech of the imagination to picture hunters having a similar system, although they would probably also need worms specialising in hearing, manipulation of objects, locomotion and balance. Standing, let alone running on two legs (in this case they would probably be classified as pseudopods) is no mean feat for any species. The standard hunter shape we all know and love would probably be the only one they are capable of forming, as it would be the product of millions of years of evelotion, and each worm would have an instinctive idea of its place within the grand blueprint of a Hunter. I am no means an expert on this subject so please correct any of this information if it is wrong. So now without further ado, is my theoretical summary of the reproductive cycle of a hunter: 1.At some point in its life, a mature hunter colony would through either a sexual or asexual process spawn, graft or give birth to a one or more "core" worms, each capable of eventually producing an entire colony. 2. These worms would be capable of asexually producing either several different types of worms (See 3a), or a single type of worm capable of mutating into other forms as required in a process similar to that of human stem cells (See 3b). 3a. The core worm would have an instinctive "blueprint" of what the final hunter colony would look like. It would create the different type of worms as needed. For example, if it needed to create an arm it would create a large number of "muscle" worms and a few "claw" worms. These worms would then use their own instinct to attach themselves to each other in a such a way that they formed the shape of a hunters arm, with the ends of the claw worms at one end. The core worm would spawn the lesser worms as needed until the basic form of a hunter has been reached. 3b. Identical to 3a, except that the core worm only produces one type of worm. This single worm type would be capable of analysing what types of worms are needed where, then mutating into that type of worm. Human stem cells work this way, and the manner in which they identify what is needed where is still unkown to scientists. 4. Once all the worms have taken their places, their nervous systems connect with each other, essentially creating a single organism. The core worm would stop continuously producing component worms, but would create more as the small worms are die through damage or age. (This also means that a unless you kill the core worm outright, a hunter would eventually regenerate any damage.) We now have a mature hunter colony. 5. If the hunter is capable of producing a natural suit of armor, it would do this now. There are two probable ways it would do this, both of which are variations of methods found here on earth. First they might use a method similar to the one used by Caddis Fly Larvae. The worms making up the outside surface of the hunter would secrete a strong, sticky glue-like substance, which would gather sediments and dust, bonding them together like concrete. Another, significantly more frightening method is that instead of a gluelike substance, the worms would secrete a liquid similar to spiders silk, forming a solid sheet coating. Spiders silk, when dried, is approximately 15 times stronger than steel, and a solid layer a centimetre or so thick would provide a level of protection roughly equivalent to two feet of concrete. That would explain the elites dificculty in removing them. 6. The cycle starts over from the beginning. I am stepping out on the long limb of imagination here, so if anyone thinks i am wrong about something here or i have left something important out please tell me.
