In Response To: Re: Problems with your theories... (Vulcan)

: However I think in the future we will see railguns in use. If I had to make
: my guess it would be in tanks. Heres why: The U.S. military is currently
: developing what they term a "nail gun" for it "nails"
: the enemy. Who said the U.S. military dident have a sense of humor?
: er...well I'll leave that for you to decide. What the weapon is, is a
: specialized sniper rifle that can be carried by a single soldier with an
: advanced laser sight. The weapon will fire a bullet specialy designed to
: penitrate tank armor. The Round will be highly advanced and will be
: capable of changeing its flight path to follow the laser sight from the
: gun (much like a laser guided missle). With a single round the sniper can
: take out a tank. How you might ask? Quite simple, they hit the magazine
: causeing the tanks amunition to explode.

All I ask is where d'you get your info? Heck, even a pointer to a Popular Science article would be favorite. :>

: So Why might railguns find there way in tanks? Because there is no need for
: chemical propellants to fire the rounds that would expload when hit by a
: tank killing sniper bullet.

What about the gas for the tank? Or if it's got enough power to fire a railgun or a coilgun, what about the reator? What if the bullet detonates inside the tank, shredding the drivers? Or why not just use an antitank rocket? Those seem to do the job nicely, and without the funky steerable bullets? Actually, why must the bullets be steerable? The idea with a laser-guided antitank missile is to guide a (filk)load of explosives to a specific point. A good sniper can pump a bullet into a person's head at serious range... he doesn't need the laser sight. The only reason for steerable bullets, to my mind, is to help the poor grunts who can't snipe. And God help them if they take the sight off-target accidentally.
But that's just my opinion, I've never served time in the military so what the heck do I know about tactics?
