Problems with your theories... | |

In Response To: How do I submit theories?? (Gabriel Bregg) : superconductors, so here goes.
Although this would add a level of redundancy (say the front left wheel was damaged you could turn off the front right wheel and drive perfeclt y fine useing the two rear wheel's). Unfortunatly this would sevearly hurt performance. Modern high speed vehicles (off road and on road) try to keep as little weight on the wheels as possible. An extream of this is seen in Formula 1 cars where both the suspention and the brakes have been moved off the wheels of the car and put inside the chassie. Although you may not see this in off road race cars, the problem still exist. They are intrested in keeping weight off the wheels to improve performance. Their only real limiting factor is that they need a significantly stronger structure which makes this harder to do. However, this doesnt totaly discount your theory. There is no reason that the vehicle cannot have four wheel independent drive just internaly and not based on the wheels. This would both provide your redundancy, as well as improve performance. : gauss weapons, which use magnetics to accelerate the procjectile, and are
You have a good point here. However these weapons would not be silent. The sound you hear from a chemical weapon fireing is not a "sound" persay but "sounds". When the weapons fire two sounds are produced, one is the sound of the weapon fireing, the other is the sound of the projectile going super sonic. A good example of this is in WWI where soldiers in the trenches keeped hearing two reports from a single weapon. This confused soldiers for quite some time, untill it was discoverd that the second sound was the bullet going super sonic. Unfortunatly inorder to have any real killing power and/or range a small calibure round needs to be traveling at or above the speed of sound. Afterall guns are really nothing more than fancy kenetic weapons. Not much diffrent that punching someone really. The real solution is more advanced bullets. If you fire a bullet at subsonic speeds the resulting weapon will not produce that much sound. Unfortunatly as mentioned befor this kills range and killing power. However, if the round itself has its own propultion, it could travel to the target at subsonic speeds, then suddenly accelorate to super sonic speeds befor hitting the target. Unfortunatly this really wouldent solve much since the sound from a gun is usuly heard after the bullet hits the target. Soldiers in Vietnam often learned not to bother ducking when they heard certian sounds because by the time you heard it, it was alredy there. However, again there is no reason for the round to really even go supersonic if it has an explosive tip (save maybe to penitrate armor then explode). That would be both silent and deadly. However, as long as we are going in this dirrection. Why dont we just say it, by the time I'm done we are going to have a 9mm hand held 22 round semi-automatic guided missle launcher. :-) Hum...I'll take two :-)
